Abstract

Seeds of Atropa belladonna were exposed to 35 Kr. of gamma irradiation, and effects of irradiation studied through M1 and M2 generations. Fifteen distinct adult plant mutations (macromutations) affecting such characters as growth habit, vigour, branching, shape and size of leaves, floral peculiarities as well as total alkaloid content were isolated in the M2 generation. A description of these mutants is given and their use in improvement of belladonna discussed.
