Cytological Findings in Chronic Non-Specific Duodenitis

Summary

The authors have studied duodenal cytology obtained through abrasive tube in a group of subjects with normal duodenal mucosa and in another group of patients with duodenitis. In the cases of chronic non-specific duodenitis, abundant cytological material, presence of inflammatory cells, alterations of enterocytes and an increase of goblet and mucoid cells are found. The cytological findings are in accordance with the histological picture of duodenitis, specially in the cases of atrophic duodenitis. The importance of cytology in the diagnosis of chronic non-specific duodenitis is outlined, plying an integrative role with the duodenal biopsy.

Zusammenfassung

Mit einer Abrasivsonde wurde Material bei gesunden Probanden und bei Patienten mit Duodenitis gewonnen. Bei chronischer unspezifischer Duodenitis wurden reichlich zytologisches Material, Entzündungszellen, Veränderungen der Enterozyten und eine Zunahme der Becherzellen und mukoiden Zellen gesehen. Die zytologischen Befunde stimmten mit dem histologischen Befund, besonders bei der atrophischen Duodenitis, überein. Die Bedeutung der Zytologie bei der Diagnose der unspezifischen chronischen Duodenitis wird betont.
