Summary

Transrectal aspiration biopsy of the prostate after Franzén's procedure modified by Reuter is a simple, but sufficiently safe method to diagnose cancer of the prostate. It does not require special instruments or special preparation of the patient. It can be carried out at the office in the bent patient and does not require more time than does a rectal prostatic examination. The danger for the patient is reduced to a minimum by this method.

The slides with the tissue material are prepared for microscopic examination in the same way as for gynecological diagnostics after Papanicolaou's method.

In cancer-negative results cytological and histological findings coincide in about 90% but in cancer-positive diagnostics cytology was superior to histology. Therefore it is recommended not only to examine the surgical specimen histologically after prostatic surgery, but also to carry out aspiration biopsy of the prostate capsule to complement cancer diagnostics. As one cannot assess the activity of a malignant process only by cytological findings it is necessary also to have the histological and clinical results in order to establish a definite diagnosis.

In cryosurgery aspiration biopsy is very important, because there is no tissue material available for histological examination as in TUR or surgical prostatectomy.
