Abstract

A new method for separation and quantitative determination of arbutin, methylarbutin, hydroquinone and hydroquinonemonomethylether in Arctostaphylos alpina, Arctostaphylos Uva-ursi, Bergenia crassifolia, Calluna vulgaris, and Vaccinium Vitis-idaea with HPLC was elaborated.

A reversed–phase system with a μ–Bondapak C18 column using methanolwater (10:90) as mobile phase was developed. The substances were separated in 22 min. The detection limit for arbutin was 25 ng at a signal–to–noice ratio of 20:1. The relative standard deviation for arbutin was circa 1.6 °/o. The results obtained by the high–performance liquid Chromatographie method are well correlated with those obtained by titrimetric and colorimetric methods.

Loiseleuria procumbens, Rhododendron ferrugineum, Rhododendron hirsutum, Vaccinium Myrtillus, and Vaccinium ulginosum do not contain the above mentioned phenolic compounds.
