Abstract
The experimental data presented in this paper demonstrate the uterine ribosomal sedimentation profiles of adult cycling and senescent rats. In the sexually mature rat a high uterine concentration of ribosomes with a large portion of oligo- and polysomes was found which demonstrates very active protein synthesis in the uterine tissue during this stage of life. However, the investigation of senescent rats resulted in a diminished content of ribosomes accompanied by a loss of polysomes and by an increase of monomeric ribosomes. This alteration of ribosomal particles presumably causes a decrease of the protein synthesizing activity in the uterus of senescent rats. It has to be assumed that these parameters are primarily regulated by endogenous estrogens. However, the reduction of uterine metabolic processes during senescence is not only provoked by the decreased rate of ovarian estrogen synthesis but also by a loss of the uterine estrogen sensitivity.
