Motor Nerve Conduction Velocity in Marasmus and in Kwashiorkor

Abstract

The motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) was measured by supramaximal stimulation in the median, ulnar and peroneal nerves in altogether 94 children in the age range 1—36 months. Forty-four served as controls, 40 presented the picture of marasmus and 10 of kwashiorkor. The children with marasmus had only one MCV examination, before nutrition rehabilitation was started. They showed values which after correction for the effect of peripheral hypothermia lay within the normal range. The children with kwashiorkor all underwent weekly MCV determinations during a 5-week period. On admission the MCV values were reduced to about 50% of the control values, a reduction which only to a limited extent could be explained by peripheral hypothermia. During nutrition rehabilitation the MCV values in all cases increased rapidly up to a normal or almost normal level.

Zusammenfassung

Motorische Nervenleitgeschwindigkeit (MLG) wurde durch supramaximale elektrische Reizung in N. medianus, N. ulnaris und N. tibialis in 94 Kindern im Alter von 1—36 Monaten gemessen, und zwar bei 44 Kontrollkindern, 40 Kindern mit Marasmus und 10 Kindern mit Kwashiorkor.

Die Kinder mit Marasmus wurden nur einmal untersucht, vor Anfang nahrungsverbessernder Maßnahmen. Die MLG-Werte in dieser Gruppe waren, nach Korrektion für periphere Hypothermie, im Normalbereich.

Die Kinder mit Kwashiorkor wurden über 5 Wochen je einmal pro Woche untersucht. Bei Spitalaufnahme waren die MLG-Werte stark erniedrigt, etwa 50% von den Normalwerten. Für diese starke Senkung spielt die periphere Hypothermie nur eine kleine Rolle. Während Diät-Therapie erhöhten sich die MLG Werte schnell und waren nach 5 Wochen ganz oder fast ganz normalisiert.
