Significance

Based upon the mechanistic rational for the formation of 2 from 1 under oxidative cyclodehydrogenation conditions, the authors devise a means to access 4. The presented work recognizes the importance of the quinodal structure of the radical cation to design a starting material (3) that will provide the desired hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC, 4) under the reaction conditions.
