Significance

Pyrene is one of the most robust and studied chromophores. It has a strong blue emission and a strong tendency to form excimers. Blue emissive polymers are of interest for emissive display materials. As a result placing pyrene groups into π-extended frameworks capable of efficiently transporting charge is of interest for use in light-emitting devices. X-ray structures of the monomer show that pendant phenyl groups are effective at preventing strong π-interactions between neighboring pyrenes to prevent excimer formation.
