Significance

The supported ruthenium hydroxide (Ru(OH)x/TiO2)-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer reactions with an alcohol as a hydrogen source were described. Reduction of carbonyl compounds with 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor in the presence of Ru(OH)x/TiO2 gave the corresponding alcohols (10 examples, 64-99% yield). Ru(OH)x/TiO2 catalyst was also effective for the reduction of allylic alcohols to saturated alcohols (6 examples, 76-98% yield). Furthermore, the chemoselective reduction of (R)-(+)-citronellal was achieved under similar reaction conditions (90% yield, >99% selectivity).
