Cytotoxic and anti-plasmodial activities of constituents of Pentadesma butyracea
Four new xanthone derivatives, named butyraxanthone A (1), B (2), C (3) and D (4), have been isolated from the stem bark of Pentadesma butyracea (Clusiaceae), together with six known xanthones [1,2] and one triterpenoid (lupeol). The structural elucidation of the new compounds was established on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR and HR-EIMS spectroscopic analysis. The anti-plasmodial activities of these compounds were evaluated, in culture against FCB1 strain of Plasmodium falciparum parasites. (IC50 of 3.0 and 2.7µg/mL for compounds 1 and 2 respectively). Compound 4 showed a potent cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 1.3µg/mL.
