Significance

The authors present a cobalt sensor exhibiting a large ratiometric fluorescence response. The sensing unit 5 consists of a zinc porphyrin substituted with three coumarin-derived moieties and one cobalt-binding 2,2′-bipyridyl unit. It is obtained via condensation of the aldehydes 1 and 2 with pyrrole and subsequent treatment with zinc acetate.
