Foreword

Speech-language pathology has always been blessed by its lack of insularity and by its willingness to seek inputs from other disciplines. After all, speech and language are studied profitably by a host of them and, as a result, are the special domain of none of them.

This issue represents an opportunity to catch up on other cognitive areas that have a direct impact on our field, both from a general as well as from a more applied clinical perspective. For many of us, the work represented here will require careful reading. Several new concepts and ways to organize them are introduced and explored for their relevance to our field. But the payoff will be tremendous.

Editing this issue has been a wonderful learning experience for me, and my understanding of my own discipline and its place within the myriad of disciplines that study speech and language has been updated and enhanced. For readers who receive CEUs for these articles, you will have earned them, but you will also have gained a great deal of important new information that you can use to enhance your clinical practice.
