Abstract

Recruitment and retention of qualified operating room and anaesthesia personnel continues to be a substantial challenge for the German health care organizations.

Operating room personnel shortage and turnover, either by mandatory retirement policies, migration to other institutions or professions, poses a significant struggle to maintain an adequate workforce to provide safe, quality care for the populations served.

With this persistently high turnover, it is more important than ever for our healthcare organizations to design and deploy initiatives that respond to and address operating rooms workforce needs.

Attracting and retaining medical personnel will require a more nuanced and innovative understanding and approach of what the operating room personnel is looking for in the profession and employer.

Strong consideration needs to be given to constructive structural and organizational solutions such as creation of a robust institutional educational program which would enhance and incentivize recruitment and long-term retention of operating rooms personnel. A unique opportunity is to recruit foreign trained personnel which can be successfully integrated through the local educational program and also development of a strong incentive recruitment package which will result in the long-term retention of medical personnel.
