Abstract

Behavioral observation is an important part of the diagnostic-therapeutic process, but there are hardly any standardized observation procedures that are regularly used and only a few studies on the implementation and benefits of behavioral observation in everyday clinical practice exist. In many non-clinical disciplines, systematic observation of behavior is a natural part of diagnostics and assessment in different disciplines. What role it currently plays in medical rehabilitation and where there is potential for its use has not yet been investigated. This article provides an overview of the subject. On one hand, we present the status regarding the use of systematic behavioral observation in medical rehabilitation. On the other hand, we show what medical rehabilitation can learn from other disciplines about systematic behavioral observation. Its use in the areas of diagnostics, therapy planning, evaluation, and performance assessment is discussed. In summary, it seems worthwhile to take a close look at the potential of behavioral observation for medical rehabilitation.
