Polyneuropathien sind generalisierte Erkrankungen des peripheren Nervensystems. Hiervon abgegrenzt werden nichtsystemische Erkrankungen peripherer Nerven aufgrund einer lokalen Schädigung durch Kompression, Infiltration oder andere äußere Einflüsse. Zum peripheren Nervensystem gehören alle außerhalb des Zentralnervensystems liegenden Teile der motorischen, sensiblen und autonomen Nerven mit ihren Schwann-Zellen und ganglionären Satellitenzellen, ihren bindegewebigen Hüllstrukturen (Peri- und Epineurium) sowie den sie versorgenden Blut- und Lymphgefäßen.
