Abstract

Language is one of the most important media in human interaction. In view of the fact, that our healthcare system is primarily concerned with measurable and billable quantities, the importance of conversation and language is rather neglected. Patient surveys often have shown, that the conversation between physician and patient has a very high priority for ill people. Language and communication are of great importance not only for patient satisfaction and compliance, but also for anamnesis and diagnosis as well as therapy, care and terminal care. Language and communication are also underestimated as an effective factor of its own for the success of a treatment.

The article summarizes the importance of these relationships, provides practical examples as well as an outlook where practical help is available.
