Insbesondere bei akuter hyperkapnischer respiratorischer Insuffizienz stellt die nicht-invasive Beatmung (NIV) neben der Behandlung der Grunderkrankung die wesentliche Maßnahme zur Vermeidung der Intubation und Reduktion der Mortalität dar. Der Erfolg der nicht-invasiven Beatmung ist an ein rasches Handeln und ein erfahrenes Team gebunden und erfordert ein engmaschiges Monitoring, um ein drohendes NIV-Versagen frühzeitig zu erkennen und darauf zu reagieren.
