This review is an update to the earlier Science of Synthesis contribution (Section 22.7.2) and describes methods for the formation of ortho esters and halogenated derivatives reported in the period 2005–2023. The first part focuses on recent advances in the synthesis of 1,1-dihalogenated ethers and 1-halogenated acetals. The second part of this review covers the latest synthetic strategies to access various functional ortho esters.
