Abstract

Most spinal deformity patients can be treated successfully with a single surgical approach; however, combined approach might be indicated in certain cases. These may be for reasons related to rigidity of the deformity, concerns regarding the potential for fusion, or other patient- or pathology-specific reasons. Vigilant preoperative planning and the availability of a surgical and anesthetic team experienced in these challenging cases are critical to a successful outcome. Whereas same-day procedures have advantages, there are times when it is prudent to stage surgery.
