Abstract

An investigation of the constituents responsible for the antitumor activity observed for extracts of Baliospermum montanum roots has afforded five new phorbol ester derivatives exhibiting anticancer activity. Of these, montanin (1) was found to be closely related to huratoxin (6), and baliospermin (3) to mancinellin (14). Evidence for the structures of the other isolates, 12–deoxyphorbol 13–palmitate (2), 12–deoxy–5β–hy–dro–xyphorbol 13–myristate (4) and 12–deo–xy–16–hydroxyphorbol13–palmitate(5), was obtained by correlation with known compounds and preparation of derivatives.
